Beyond the Company Name: Finding the Right Fit with ZipUpp

Look beyond a company name to find an environment where your experience can make a difference. Get to know each other before sharing personal details and taking the next step.

A job seeker with an anonymous profile exchanges questions with a company about the work and working environment.

I don’t think everyone considering a career change starts with a particular company in mind.

Instead, they may be asking: What kind of company would make the best use of my skills and experience? Where could I find an environment that suits the way I work? How can I build on the career I’ve developed so far?

I believe more people are approaching their next career move with these questions in mind.

Of course, the reputation and stability of a large company still appeal to many people. But the decision goes beyond wanting to work for a well-known name. People also want to understand what they can contribute and what their working life would actually look like.

I think this shift has significant implications for how companies hire.

Exploring Your Options Shouldn’t Mean Revealing Your Identity Too Soon

Another important part of this conversation is the experience of people who are currently employed.

They may not have decided to leave their jobs. But if there is an opportunity that suits them better, they would like to hear about it. Even without serious dissatisfaction with their current employer, they may want to know whether another environment could make better use of their experience.

I believe many people feel this way.

Yet exploring a career change while employed comes with concerns. People don’t want their current employer to find out. And they may feel uncomfortable sharing their name, employer, and contact details before they know enough about the company on the other side.

They simply want to learn about an opportunity, but first they are asked to hand over their own information. That order of events can make it harder to take the first step.

I believe people should have a way to explore their possibilities with greater peace of mind.

That is one of the ideas behind ZipUpp.

Get to Know a Company While Staying Anonymous

On ZipUpp, job seekers can explore opportunities without publicly sharing personal information such as their name or contact details. Their current employer is also kept private by default.

They can let companies learn about their skills and experience, and ask questions before moving on to an interview.

This is about more than checking basic conditions such as salary and location.

What work would I actually be responsible for? Where would my experience be most useful? How much autonomy would I have? What would be expected of me after joining, and how would my performance be evaluated?

There is a great deal that a job description alone cannot tell you.

By asking these questions, candidates can consider whether a company is a good fit for them. They can then decide whether to share their personal information and move forward with a formal hiring process.

A career move is more than a company choosing a candidate. It is also a person making an important decision about where to invest their time and experience.

I want people to feel comfortable gathering the information they need to make that decision.

Helping Companies Connect Through More Than Their Name

Companies face challenges of their own.

Before they can hire someone, they first need people to know they exist. That often means paying for job advertisements, improving careers pages, producing photos and videos, and continually communicating what makes the company attractive.

Helping people understand a company matters. But not every business can keep investing that much money and effort in recruitment marketing.

For small and medium-sized businesses in particular, it can be a considerable burden.

A company may be relatively unknown yet offer an excellent environment for someone with a particular set of skills. Another may have a limited advertising budget but provide a supportive and rewarding place to work.

It seems a missed opportunity if those companies and the people looking for exactly those environments never meet simply because the company name is unfamiliar.

With ZipUpp, I want to help candidates and companies connect through the alignment between skills, experience, and working conditions, without relying so heavily on name recognition or the ability to promote themselves.

Candidates can ask, “Could I put my experience to good use here?”

Companies can ask, “Do this person’s skills and experience match what we need?”

From there, both sides can ask questions and develop a better understanding of each other.

This can also help companies reach beyond people who already want to work for them. It opens the door to people who may become interested once they understand the role, the conditions, and the opportunity to contribute.

Making It Easier to Explore—and Choose with Understanding

What I want to build with ZipUpp is an environment where candidates feel comfortable exploring their next opportunity, and companies can meet people who are right for their needs.

Candidates should be able to explore without revealing personal information earlier than necessary. Companies should have ways to connect with suitable people beyond spending heavily on advertising and employer branding.

Both sides should be able to understand what the other is looking for, consider whether there is a fit, and move forward when it feels right.

Career decisions can shape a person’s life. Hiring decisions can shape a business. That is why I want both sides to have more opportunities to understand the things that a company name or an appealing job advertisement cannot fully convey.

There are people looking for a company that suits them, and companies that need exactly what those people can offer.

Creating more opportunities for them to find each other is what I want to achieve with ZipUpp.
