Can AI Interviews Outperform Human Interviews? What New Research Means for the Future of Hiring

New research compares AI and human interviews. What can it tell us about hiring quality, information gathering, and ZipUpp’s vision of AI support and human decisions?

Figures compare the AI and human interview groups in relative terms. The 18–19% increase uses all applicants as the denominator. These are not ZipUpp performance results.

Research Suggests AI Interviews Can Improve Hiring Outcomes

Some fascinating research recently caught my attention.

ITmedia NEWS covered a paper on October 30, 2026, titled “Voice AI in Firms: A Natural Field Experiment on Automated Job Interviews,” by researchers from Carnegie Mellon University and other institutions.

The study covered 70,884 applications for customer service roles in the Philippines. Of these, 67,056 were randomly assigned to groups comparing human interviews, AI interviews, and a choice between the two. AI handled questions and information gathering; human recruiters made the final hiring decisions.

The results were striking.

Applicants interviewed by AI were 12% more likely to receive a job offer than those interviewed by a human.

They were also 18% more likely to start work.

Across all applicants, the share employed at each point from one to four months after joining was around 18–19% higher.

Those hired after AI interviews performed comparably to those interviewed by humans.

These are relative increases. The 18–19% figure measures employment across all applicants; it does not mean retention among people who had already joined improved by that amount.

AI also elicited approximately 1.5 times as much information useful for hiring decisions.

Why might this happen?

Human interviewers’ assessments can be influenced by their experience and abilities, as well as their health, emotions, preconceptions, and rapport with a candidate on the day.

In this study, AI combined consistent questions with responsive follow-ups to gather relevant information efficiently.

To me, this points to the potential for a more consistent, fairer, and more efficient hiring process. The study does not, by itself, establish that AI is free of bias.

This Is the Kind of Hiring ZipUpp Aims to Enable

I am currently building ZipUpp, a recruitment and career platform that uses AI.

Our goal is to reduce the wasted effort and inefficiency in conventional hiring and create a more practical way for companies and job seekers to find each other.

At the center of that approach is a simple principle: AI organizes the information, and people make the final decisions.

Through AI-assisted candidate screening and anonymous interviews, ZipUpp helps companies efficiently understand the information they need to make hiring decisions.

Companies can reduce the burden of reading large volumes of résumés and repeating interviews with many candidates from the outset.

For job seekers, this also creates the possibility of having their experience, abilities, and suitability assessed in a fairer environment.

I see these research findings as encouraging support for the direction we are pursuing with ZipUpp.

Of course, one study cannot establish that AI interviews outperform human interviews in every industry or role. This research also did not measure the effectiveness of ZipUpp itself.

Still, I believe it is a significant finding that AI interviews may do more than reduce staffing costs or streamline administration: they may improve the quality of hiring itself.

Will AI Replace Human Recruiters?

I do not think that necessarily follows.

Hiring is an important business decision. Ultimately, people should take responsibility for making it.

But there will likely be more situations where AI can outperform people in the information gathering and analysis that lead up to that decision.

Let AI handle what it does well, so people can concentrate on the judgments that need their attention.

Isn’t that the direction hiring should take?

I Want More Companies to Put ZipUpp to Work

Today, many companies spend substantial time and money on recruitment.

Job seekers face their own burden: registering with multiple job sites, submitting résumés, and going through repeated interviews.

I want to change that conventional process.

Learning about this research has strengthened my conviction in the direction ZipUpp is taking.

AI-assisted hiring is no longer a distant possibility.

Research is already beginning to demonstrate its value in real hiring environments.

That is why I want more companies to discover ZipUpp and start using it.

Make hiring simpler, fairer, and more efficient.

By bringing together the strengths of AI and people, ZipUpp aims to help establish a new standard for recruitment.
